"The Dances of the Metis" "Li Dawns di Michif"
"This video is a brief overview of seven Metis dances and accompanying fiddle tunes. The dances are skilful and are wearing period dress from the Late Victorian and early Edwardian (1890-1910) eras. The setting of this video is outdoors, which gives the viewer the feeling that they are attending an old-time summer social. This video is not an instructional video: it is rather a demonstration of the skill and timeless quality of the traditional Metis dancing and fiddle playing by masterful performers. Each dance is introduced by a narrator who briefly discusses the dance’s origins before the scene cuts to lively dancing and musical accompaniment. This is the video’s main strength since our focus is not on an obtrusive narrator but on the performers themselves. Narration only occurs to introduce the dance and fiddle tunes. This allows the viewer to almost be a participant at a traditional Metis dance. Close-up shots of the footwork, fiddling and cording only contribute to this effect. The selection of dances- including jigs, quadrilles, waltzes and reels - chosen also demonstrate the diversity of Metis dancing and fiddle playing. Overall, this video is a welcome addition to our knowledge of Metis dance and fiddling. It is suitable for both the novice and for those well acquainted with Metis dancing." Darren R.
